Revealing Benefits Of GPS Fleet Management

By Jack Stevens

Controlling the total cost of maintaining a group of vehicles is the primary goal of GPS fleet management. This will involve the creation of a program for the vehicles diagnostics and maintenance, setting of controls and standards to maintain vehicle efficiency and effectiveness including fuel consumption, speed management, safekeeping and accurate tracking of the vehicles to preclude unauthorized use and mishandling.

One instrument that can perfectly do vehicle tracking is the GPS or Global Positioning System. Installing a GPS receiver on a vehicle will enable the Fleet Manager to pinpoint its precise location wherever it is on an electronic map. However, it will be prudent to evaluate first if its installation on all the company vehicles will really be beneficial to the company.

Some of the more important points to consider will be the necessity to track down all the movements of the vehicles and its drivers; having an accurate knowledge of the delivery time is of essence to the business; and the extreme necessity of tracking down and eventual retrieval of the vehicle in the event of theft or carjacking.

The system can monitor habitual driving speed of the driver and serve as a speed controlling tool. Real time information of turnaround time in the delivery of goods and/or services. It can be used for directional information if the driver is no so familiar with the taken route. It sets an alarm to remind driver of maintenance schedule.

It can remind drivers on vehicles schedule of maintenance. It can help the driver plan daily itineraries using the best routes to maximize time and cut on fuel costs. The drivers real time activities can be monitored, thus knowing if they are gallivanting or taking long breaks during office hours.

The GPS fleet management system can generate an assortment of reports which will be helpful for planning, budgeting and control requirements. Most importantly the system can be used as a deterrent for misbehavior and mishandling of the vehicle thus promoting care and proper use of the vehicle which redounds to extended life and lesser maintenance cost.

It will be quite tricky, if not downright impossible to simultaneously monitor a big number of vehicles that are on the road most of the time. Of course, set policies and controls are issued all the time and are expected to be followed by employees. However, a hundred percent adherence to them will be very unlikely. The GPS fleet management system makes this improbable task achievable.
