What to Know Before You Build a Desktop PC

By Beau Allerton

Desktop computers come in a wide range of models that are designed to deal with any number of possible uses. Why, then, do consumers often customize or build their own desktop PC? Wouldn't it just be simpler to buy a stock model? What benefits, exactly, does building a computer offer?

The fact is that sometimes a user's situation may be so unique that the only way a computer will be able to fit those circumstances is to build one especially for them. This is not necessarily a simple endeavor, but it is easier on a desktop than it would be on a laptop. Only the user can define exactly what is needed in their unique position, and this gives them the perspective needed to build the perfect PC.

One of the great flexibilities of a desktop PC is that you can decide what to install and what not to install. This customizability allows a user to truly define what they need. It could be that they need more RAM or hard disc space than a store model will give them. Or, maybe a user needs something more basic than they can find in the store. Either way, building a PC on your own gives you the flexibility to just get what you need and nothing more.

So if you're going to build a custom desktop PC, where should you start? It would be a good idea to start with the processor. Do you need a dual-core or a quad-core? Next you'll want to get a good motherboard and enough memory. You need to make sure that your motherboard is compatible with everything else you choose since everything is attached to it. You'll also want to get one that allows for future upgrades.

Drive space is also an important part of desktop construction. If the computer is going to be used for large video files, sound files, or other design programs, the computer must include a large enough hard drive. But if the computer is going to be a gaming system, the rpms might be the more important factor.

There are also other consideration you can make such as peripherals. What kind of monitor do you want to have? Do you need to have any other special drives or connections? All of these things need to be considered when you build your own computer.

Most consumers will be able to get by just fine with a store-bought desktop. But there are always those people out there that need a specialized computer. When those times come up, building it on your own is a good option to go with.
