By Margaret H Moore

A lot of of the best children's films have been adapted from splendid children's literature. Dearly loved kids books that have stood the test of time often make magnificent children's movies. Most of these movies are celebrated on their own but a inquiry is how strictly do the movies stick to the storyline of the book?

A somewhat recent movie that was adapted from a series of books is "The Spiderwick Chronicles" from 2008. The film was adapted from the series of books by the same name authored by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi. There has only been one film so far but there are really 5 books in the series at this point. The books and the motion picture follows the quest of a family unit of kids who move into a new home where they find a extraordinary book that leads them into a land filled with goblins and trolls, elves and dwarves and other creatures.

In 1964, the writer Roald Dahl brought us the darling book, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". This great book has been adapted into 2 very well-liked movies, "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" in 1971 with Gene Wilder starring as Willy Wonka and in 2005, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" with Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka.

In 1952, the writer, E.B. White brought us one of the most darling kids stories of all times with "Charlotte's Web". The book has remained in print always since its first publication. An cartoon film of "Charlotte's Web" was released in 1973. In December 2006, a live action film version was released. Both movies followed the original story faithfully.

Dr. Seuss is one of the most beloved family writers of all time. A few of his books have been made into celebrated movies. "Horton Hears a Who" came out in 2008 with Jim Carrey as the voice of Horton. This is an animated feature film that follows the storyline of the book practically unerringly.

Another Seuss masterpiece, "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" was made into an cartoon version in 1966 and it still shows on many program schedule for the period of the holiday time of year. The cartoon rendering follows the tale accurately. However, in the year 2000, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" the live action adaptation came out with Jim Carrey in the lead role as the Grinch. In that film many new events and scenes were added. In the 2003 edition of "The Cat and the Hat" also by Dr. Seuss, liberties were again taken and the storyline was added to with events and scenes not found in the book.

One of the uppermost grossing film series of all times is from the kids books on Harry Potter written by J.K. Rowling. At this point six of the seven books have been made into movies with a proposal to make 2 movies from the 7th installment for a total of 8 movies. This series is the 2nd highest grossing series in the past behind James Bond.

Children's books many times turn into movies that are cool for the entire family unit to view. Reading the books aloud to your kids and viewing the films all together is a great family pastime, where celebrated memories can be made.
